Dust boutique closes it's doors

It is with great sadness that I have to announce we are no longer keeping the shop open and will be closing the door's for the last time on 31st December. The reason is down to a couple of factors. Firstly our landlord (Network Rail) has asked to move out of the shop for 3 months while they do full strip of our arch. This means we would either have to close for 3 months, or temporarily move to a less desirable location. But mainly we want to take this time to really focus on our online business and the development and growth of our (relatively) newly launched womenswear brand Dust and our successful kidswear clothing range Stardust.

I would like to thank Everyone for their custom and continued support over 11 wonderful years of being an independent shop in Herne Hill. We've had many great times here and look forward to the new challenge that lies ahead of us.

We will be having a SALE in the shop starting from 1st November, so get down for bargains galore!

The designer focuses on producing an eco-friendly shoe using traditional shoe making techniques resulting is a shoe that will last for years and looks fabulous. The components of the shoes comprise by produced leather from the meat industry and the soles are made from recycled car tyres. They are superb quality and the leather is just so soft and cushioned!

We've been busy this week painting the shop a new shade: Proud Peacock! What do you think? We're loving it, and it it certainly drew in alot of attention from passers by. We've taken the colour inside too and painted along the back wall to reflect our new brand colours. It's still a work in progress and the finishing touches are being made this weekend.

Think big bulky vintage cabinets, recycled work benches and industrial units, and you're getting the idea of our new look boutique. We're all about recycling, re-using, and turning other peoples waste into our treasure. Coupled with a bright, bold product range it's a very exciting time for the boutique. The boutique will be closed for a few days at the beginning of next week (sun 5th sept - tue 7th sept), when all the heavy work will commence. Overalls at the ready!! Please feel free to drop in with tea, cake or biscuits. Cheers.

Zandra Rhodes at Pure Trade Show 2010

I was very excited to discover that one of my favourite designers Zandra Rhodes, would be taking part in a discussion with vogue.com at PURE trade show earlier this week, about her inspirations, past, present and future. The iconic, eccentric British designer famed for her pink hair and bold, bright textile prints was at the show to promote her new handbag range in collaboration with British label Red or Dead. Here's how it went:

Excitable and chatty throughout, you get the sense that she lives very much in her own bubble. When asked what new, young designers she felt were 'ones to watch', she didn't seem to know who any of them where. 'I'll have to ask you to introduce me to who's current' she said to the interviewee. Eek - awkward! Come on Zandra keep up! She resumed herself though when citing Ossie Clarke, Jean Muir and Bill Gibb (all contemporaries from her heyday), as inspirational designers she most admired. When asked her thoughts on London, she emphasised that people aren't afraid to experiment with their look, making London a great source of inspiration for designers. 'Everyone has their own personality and style' said Zandra. It is an amazing and very inspirational city to live in. We barely have to leave the capital when designing our own Dust collection, fabrics, jewellery, trimmings, the list is endless, are all sourced here. Just take a stroll down Brixton Market for all the inspiration you need. With every culture and nationality, and so much amazing exotic food stalls it's hard not to feel inspired! And with the Zandra Rhodes Fashion and Textile museum just up from the road from us in Battersea, it's well worth a visit.

The most amazing thing about Zandra though, is her presence, and she looked AMAZING, as ever. I have never seen anyone work that many colours, patterns, styles AND bright pink hair, all at once, and look totally inspirational. She has what I call 'it'. She just has 'it', and it works. She loved talking about her hair too. When asked how hard/easy it was to maintain, she claimed it was the easiest colour she has ever had. I can concur, having dyed my hair bright pink in my younger days it really is an easy colour to wear. It definitely makes a statement and has led many of today's pop fashionistas to follow suit - Lady Gaga, Lilly Allen, Kelly Osbourne, Katy Perry, to name a few.

She wrapped up the interview with a strut down the catwalk, like a kaleidoscope of fantasy inspired rainbow prints, chiffon floor length dress billowing behind her (by which time I was fumbling around frantically for my camera, so missed the photo op) accompanied by four models all in Zandra Rhodes original, print chiffon dresses for S/S 11 - magical!

Shopping Events in London: Lambeth Country Show

We're so excited to be taking part in the Lambeth Country Show again this year, held in Brockwell Park, South London. We'll be there to offer you on-hand styling hints and tips, designer threads at bargain prices and soaking up some rays, as the lovely London summer sun beams down on us! What's more all of our clothes will be on sale at silly prices (we mean seriously low), so head down there early for all the best bargains.

As one of the cultural highlights of the summer, the show will be bringing a little piece of the countryside to the city with all the best a summer fair has to offer, with live music, farm yard animals, storytelling, fairground rides and games. And along with our fellow trades people there will be plenty of colourful and exuberant stalls offering local produce, crafts, exotic food and wines, clothes, jewellery and art. Whilst wandering around to the soundtrack of Reggae, Ska and Soul from local bands and musicians on the main stage, don't miss out on the Caribbean food from one of the many food stalls, delicious! We'll see you there!

Here's fashion festival essential item no: 2, the sturdy all purpose leather mini zip up bag. Traditionally a make up bag, but you can use it to carry around your make up, money, jewellery or wares in. The colour and print is really striking, and there's tonnes of designs in the collection, ranging from bees, robots, brogues or butterflies. I use mine for all those pesky bits and bobs that somehow make it into the bottom of my bag - no more rummaging around for keys anymore.

It's Team Green Britain Bike Week also, what better excuse to get your pins in great shape for the shorts and wellies combo look? So get cycling!

Festival Fashion Trends

Glasto is almost upon us and I'm getting serious envy at those of you that managed to bag a ticket in time. I always seem to be in the wrong place at the wrong time when the ticket lines open. I have, however, managed to get myself into a few free outdoor gigs recently and want to share a piece of valuable information with you....it does rain, WHATEVER the weather starts out like, so you will need a decent bag to carry around your cagoule and other showerproof essentials with you throughout the day. I bagged myself (excuse the pun) this really cool over-the-shoulder bag from the boutique, before I left for Finsbury park's free gig the other weekend, and it proved a lifesaver. Not only was it roomy enough to hold all my stuff (which had the boys asking 'Why do you need to carry so much stuff around?' Women just do ok, don't ask), but it looked incredibly stylish too in this amazing blue colour. It has a really secure clasp - a karabiner buckle, traditionally used for rock climbing - and with the fold over feature, makes this a really secure bag, perfect for such busy places as festivals. Just don't forget to pack your cagoule in it....

I love this, if only I could get away with carrying all my essentials in a bucket! Not quite practical though is it?

Poets Corner Street Party in Herne Hill

We've been busy in the studio this week designing a new t-shirt for our local street party in Herne Hill, London. We'll be getting involved and handing out limited edition Stardust t-shirts and collecting for our local charity, Lambeth Autism. Designed and hand printed by us and inspired by the Poets Corner Street logo, in true Stardust style the t-shirt features a graffiti slogan across the font. Check it out below, and let us know what you think.....
The event this year will take place on Regents Road in the Poets corner district of Herne Hill - aptly named after the series of street names in the region, Shakespeare Rd, Milton Rd, Chaucer Rd etc. On July 10th we'll be heading down there with a dish or two in tow, and hopefully sampling some of the cuisine being cooked up by the locals. With tonnes of activities for the kids and live music there'll be plenty of entertainment for everyone. Heck I was sold at face painting!

Fancy a shot at fame? The street party is looking for local bands, musicians and performers to get up and entertain live on the day. Mens Shopping in London: Geeky Fashion

With all the geeky going’s on of late I can’t help but write about the invasion of all things robot happening at Dust and Stardust Boutique recently. There’s a new Doctor in town (Dr Who of course) which has spawned a whole new level of discussion amongst fans about whether he will live up to the previous Doctor’s reputation, spiralling geeky conversations way beyond, who cares? Not to mention the special screening’s of the popular series at the British Film Institute. And this year sees the anniversary of legendary computer game Pac Man... yes! 30 years since this legendary icon was born (originally called Puck Man but later changed for the US market – see that’s my bit of geeky knowledge exposed). I can’t believe it’s been 30 years since 1980!!!! Crikey!

Dotted around London you’ll also see the graffiti artist Invader leaving his mark on the capital with cheeky little space invaders here and there, which must have seeped into our subconscious because we’ve been inspired this season to design a new Space Invader print using our own Jolly Roger design, for the Stardust Kids range. What do you think? It’s been a great seller in the shop. I can't wait to see what else springs up on the walls of our capital.

South London Business Awards Ceremony

Last night was the much anticipated South London Business Awards, and what a night in was! Amongst the paps, wine spillages (I am so sorry to the poor lady sitting next to me who endured the full effect of my clumsiness) and David Jensen, was an exuberant evening celebrating the best of South London's businesses. Oh and have I mentioned yet that we were HIGHLY COMMENDED in the category of Best Small Business!! What an honour to receive this recognition, we're buzzing in the office this morning and with winning Best Independent Retailer at the Lambeth Business Awards it just goes to show that we must be doing something right!

And last night's cermony was the debut of my new Roxanne Dress by Dust. I was a bit unsure of wether or not it clashes with my hair (it's taking some getting used to from blonde to red) but I decided to risk it and let the public decide (thanks to the nice lady who complimented me whilst in the ladies toilet). And you might notice that Gel is wearing is exactly the same but in blue.... I hope this isn't misinterpreted and we make it in to the ghastly 'Cirlce of Shame' column in some sickly gossip magazine. 'We meant to!!!' Notice how Gel has cleverly accessorised hers with a beautiful vintage brooch and 40's red lips... tres chic. Although I do believe that the ultimate accessory is an Ahmed on your arm, he rocked the look in his tweed grey suit from scandanavian label 4 you.

CONGRATULATIONS..... to the overall winners of the night Rowland Brothers International for scooping Best Business with outstanding contribution to the public. Congratulations also to the girls sat on out table from Independant mindbodysoul for picking up Best Business for Marketing - your threrapies look amazing, I'll be sure to drop by for a treatment soon. And to winners of the Best Small Business category Chainbow, delivering excellent service in the field of Residential Property Management.

London Events: A Cut Above...

The week in brief! - Last week saw the celebration of local sights, personalities and businesses!

As we've already mentioned, it was a fantastic evening for local businesses at the Lambeth Business Awards on Tuesday and to recognise all the hard work that also goes on behind the scenes on a daily basis. On the same day it was also great to see the article in The Stylist highlighting East Dulwich mum, Claire Rowney and her one-day-diary as Head of Events at Cancer Research UK. The official unveiling of the Windrush Square by the Mayor in Brixton, was a great end to the week, drawing the crowds on Saturday with a day of entertainment and celebration! Everyone was particularly impressed with the sculptures of the rushes as captured here (above right). The square looks gorgeous in the sunshine with clusters of seating and in the evening the creative use of lighting looks beautiful. Get down there to check it out!

Dust Boutique wins Best Independent Retailer 2010 !

Dust boutique has been awarded Best Independent Retailer by Lambeth Business Awards 2010. On receiving the award, Geraldine Homewood, founder of the Dust boutique said:

"It is a great honour and privilege to win this year’s award. It has been a real team effort and we would like to thank all our suppliers and customers for supporting us over the years. We are delighted and extremely happy to have received this recognition. "

The awards, launched in September, showcased and rewarded businesses ranging from one person operations to companies employing more than 100 people. With 52 different organisations shortlisted across eleven categories, the other nominations in this category included, JZD, Purity Skin Centre, The Village Card Shop, Firebox.com and Flowers24Hours.co.uk.

The recent success reflects an incredible year after the launch of the new Dust womenswear label, introduced in A/W’09 which is all designed, sourced and manufactured locally. Director Geraldine Homewood stressed the importance to the brand of the local procurement of manufacturers and suppliers and ‘supporting other local businesses like us during this difficult economic time.’

We've tracked down these two gorgeous pieces for our vintage cabinet. If you haven't yet seen the vintage cabinet, pop into the boutique in Herne Hill where you'll find some really unique trinkets, jewellery and bags that our vintage expert has sourced. But for now, feast your eyes on these yummy treats!

This kitsch purse which dates mid-forties is completely beaded and in lovely condition. It would make a great mini-clutch for a friend who is nutty about nautical or even an unusual addition to a dressing table - great for storing jewellery items in!

This pretty brooch dates from the 1930s. The blue diamantes really catch the light so this has been twinkling away in the corner of the office ever since it arrived. It would make a great addition to a simple jacket and is in great condition for its age. If we can bear to part with it, it'll be on sale in the vintage cabinet before the weekend. Get in quick!

Book Club

A delivery of the new season's books arrived this morning and we're already ticking presents off our Christmas list with the great selection. They're due to go online in a couple of days....but in the meantime, I couldn't wait to show you a preview of my favourites....

Family is a collection of images from the photographer Lauren Dukoff who happens to be good friends with a seriously cool bunch of people. This book has everyday pictures of some of my favourite muscians; Bat for Lashes, Devendra Banhart, Joanna Newsom and Vashti Bunyan....

The settings are beautiful and even prompted one member of staff to say "Remind me why I live in London?". This book would make a great gift for any folksy friends you may have.

Next up is Iron Me On, a book of iron-on fabric transfers. All hand drawn, the transfers have a really humorous feel, from birds wearing spectacles to skate boarding fir trees. This book would make a great present for older kids, regardless of gender.

Lastly, for the goryily-engrossed amongst you (and we have a few in our office), is the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies which is described as "The classic Regency romance, now with ultraviolent zombie mayhem". Complete with gruesome illustrations, this book rewrites the quaint original and adds a bit of attitude. Perfect for Hallowe'en bedtime reading...if you dare!

I've been carrying around a battered old make-up bag which I got as a freebie, so was really excited when the new range of washbags and make-up bags arrived in the shop - its high time I had an upgrade! The range is really striking, with beautiful prints and as you can see from the pic, some great contrast linings. I've actually opted for the washbag as a make-up bag (not sure what this says about how much make-up I wear.....) but theres a whole range of shapes and sizes.

From the pic you might also be able to make out the plate I use to keep all my hair grips together. It's a 1960s Midwinter plate from the vintage cabinet in the shop. Keep an eye on the cabinet for some really gorgeous and truly unique gift ideas.
